ODM announces special memorial service for Raila Odinga in Uganda
By Kenneth Mwenda, October 27, 2025The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced that a special memorial prayer service for its departed leader, Raila Odinga, will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at the All Saints Cathedral Church in Kampala, Uganda.
In a post shared on the party’s official X account on Monday, October 27, 2025, ODM said the service will honour Raila’s memory and recognise his contribution to Kenya and the region.
“A special memorial prayer service in honour of our departed leader @RailaOdinga will be held tomorrow at the All Saints Cathedral Church in Uganda. Special thanks to Captain @Mukulaa, Baba’s friend and team for this honour. We are grateful,” the statement read.
The post came hours after ODM confirmed Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga as its new party leader, marking a major leadership transition following Raila’s death earlier this month.

Oburu confirmed as ODM party leader
During a Central Committee meeting held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Chungwa House in Nairobi, the ODM leadership officially endorsed Oburu Oginga to take over the party’s top seat. The committee urged members across the country to support him as he leads the movement through what it described as a “difficult period.”
“That we endorse Hon. Dr Oburu Oginga as the new Party Leader and urge the party rank and file to accord him all the necessary support and cooperation to enable him to guide the party through this difficult time,” the statement from the meeting read.
Honouring Raila’s legacy
The ODM Central Committee reaffirmed its commitment to upholding Raila’s legacy of democracy, peace, and inclusivity. The party said it will continue to maintain its national character and avoid internal divisions that could weaken its unity.
As part of the tribute to Raila, the party announced that a series of memorial services will take place across several counties. Events will be held in Magarini, Kilifi County, on November 2 and 3, followed by services in Homa Bay and Migori counties on November 5 and 6, 2025.
These memorials, ODM said, will give supporters across the country an opportunity to celebrate Raila’s life and his decades of service to the nation.
ODM also confirmed that it will proceed with its 20th anniversary celebrations, dubbed ODM@20, scheduled for November 14 to 16, 2025 in Mombasa. The party said the events will focus on unity, renewal, and reflection on the movement’s founding principles.
The anniversary will include public engagements, leadership forums, and outreach activities aimed at strengthening the party’s connection with its members and supporters.
