Six governors from Nyanza have clashed with the Nyanza Professional’s caucus over the planned Nyanza International Investment Conference (NIIC) scheduled to take place from June 28-29 in Kisumu.

The governors Anyang Nyong’o, (Kisumu), Ochilo Ayacko (Migori), James Orengo (Siaya), Amos Nyaribo (Nyamira), Simba Arati (Kisii), Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) have threatened to boycott the event for allegedly being sidelined.

They claimed in a statement issued by Nyong’o on their behalf that the County Executives had all along been sidelined in the planning of the conference.

This even as the organisers of the conference in an advert in the local dailies, last week, disclosed that all the six governors were lined up as speakers in the event that is slated for June 28-29 at Ciala Resort in Kisumu.

But the Governors claimed that they have not been briefed about the upcoming conference and only learnt about their participation from the local dailies.

“We have not received any formal briefing or invitation from the organizers, yet they are portraying us as participants,” the resentful governors said in a joint statement.

“We have a history of hosting successful investment conferences and collaborating with various stakeholders to drive economic prosperity in the region,” Nyong’o said.

The leaders have challenged the organizers to issue an apology for using their manes and images in promoting the conference without authorization.

They protested over the event organised by the Nyanza Professional Forum, accusing the organizers of the conference of making a unilateral decision to associate governors with the upcoming event without their sought consent or approval.

NIIC in collaboration with the National government, County governments, private sector, and communities in the Nyanza Counties, has been marketing the conference.

While the Nyanza International Investment Forum chairman Eng George Omolo, disclosed that they had finalized plans to hold the conference, the governors claimed they aren’t aware and aren’t part of it as of now till they are consulted.

But NIIC avers that the planning of the event has been participatory, involving all relevant stakeholders including governors or in their absence, their representatives, to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to stimulating sustainable development in the Nyanza region.

“The Nyanza Professional’s Forum, is a nonpolitical organization, and has been actively engaging with the six governors and their senior representatives to brief them on  the conference, its objectives, and expected outcomes. Why the fuss now when its at climax,’’ Omolo posed.

But he was grateful for the support received from the county’s representatives mostly, the County Ministers and their readiness to embrace the  initiative by the professionals from Nyanza.

“Formal engagements through various physical meetings were followed by official invitations to all six governors from Nyanza, which have been duly received,’’ said Omolo.
