NTSA urges Kenyans to transfer vehicles inherited or managed under estate
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has encouraged Kenyans to transfer vehicles that they have inherited or managed under an estate.
In a statement issued via its official X account on Monday, January 19, 2026, NTSA said the process can be done through an alternative transfer process, also known as forced transfer.
According to the authority, the move protects families and owners from ownership disputes.
“Vehicles inherited or managed under an estate must be transferred through an alternative transfer process. This protects families and owners from ownership disputes,” NTSA stated.

Forced transfer process
To complete the process, NTSA says the client is required to first visit their portal, to serviceportal.ntsa.go.ke, then go to services and select alternative/forced transfer.
They should then fill in the required information and select the type of transfer before attaching the required original, clear scanned documents in one PDF document.
They are then required to indicate the collection centre and the ID of the authorised person to collect the logbook, and then submit.

Payment
After submitting, the client is then supposed to make payments for forced transfer and inspection, then wait for seven days to elapse for the system to prompt them to book for inspection.
After booking the inspection at a preferred centre and date, one is required to present the vehicle and submit the physical documents uploaded at the preferred NTSA office.
Charges depend on the CC rating and inspection fee, with a timeline of three working days.
Seamless transfer
In September 2025, NTSA introduced key efficiencies in the motor vehicle transfer of ownership process, making it faster and more user-friendly.
Before purchasing a vehicle, NTSA advised buyers to search the authority’s portal to obtain a copy of the vehicle records for crucial information that enables buyers to make informed decisions.
NTSA added that the entire transfer of ownership process was fully digital. Sellers can now initiate the transfer online, and buyers accept it through the same portal, eliminating the need for physical forms or multiple visits to NTSA offices. Payments are seamlessly made through the E-Citizen platform.
”The process is paperless. The seller initiates the transfer online, the buyer accepts digitally; no physical forms or multiple visits to the NTSA office are required.” NTSA said.
