Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have spent Sh78.8 billion on various projects countrywide in the past year, mainly related to the Big Four agenda, a new report has shown.
Some Sh41.8 billion was spent on health, HIV/Aids, education and relief and disaster management.
The lobbies spent Sh30.8 billion on health-related projects, Sh3.8 billion on food security and nutrition, Sh352.6 million on manufacturing and Sh19.6 million on housing and settlement.
The Annual NGO Sector Report 2018/19 released yesterday shows 3,028 NGOs, which filed reports, received Sh165.97 billion to implement projects.
Further, the NGO Board has registered more than 11,000 NGOs since 1992 and over 8,000 of the organisations are active.
NGOs contribute immensely to national development, the report said, with the 3,028 groups spending Sh133.8 billion in the country.
The report, alongside the Board’s Strategic Plan 2020-22, was launched yesterday by the Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
“Non-state actors play a crucial role in the country. We have had difficult times in the past but we have developed a solid partnership,” said the CS.
