Nepotism, corruption claims stalk former city liquor boss

Allegations of nepotism featured prominently during a meeting between Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Nairobi County Assembly and officials from City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Board.

In a tense session, former director Nairobi Liquor Board Hesbon Angwena was put to task to respond to allegations that he employed his family members to serve in various capacities at the board.

Angwena was at pains to respond to the claims that three of his children were hired irregularly. In his response, Angwena said that all county staff are hired by the County Public Service Board, failing to confirm or deny that he hired his children.

“I cannot hire anyone. Nairobi County Service Board does the hiring,” he maintained.

Sources privy to the matter told People Daily in confidence that Angwena’s two sons and a daughter are employed in the county liquor board with one based at the Westlands sub-county liquor board. Chair of PAC Chege Mwaura said the committee will summon Angwena next week to shed more light regarding nepotism claims.

“All these shenanigans will end. We will get a solution and we will know who is supposed to do what and where he/she is supposed to be,” he said.

Angwena also dismissed allegations that he used to receive kickbacks to give licenses to some clubs.
