Ndegwa Njiru highlights evolving coalition dynamics ahead of 2027 polls
By Faith Lagat, May 22, 2026Advocate Ndegwa Njiru has weighed in on Kenya’s shifting political alignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, stating that emerging coalition dynamics are increasingly favouring Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
In a post on X dated May 22, 2026, Njiru said the momentum within opposition politics was tilting towards Kalonzo Musyoka and suggested that President William Ruto was in denial of this development. He framed the upcoming election contest as more than a political competition.
“The 2027 contest will not merely be political, rather a battle between good and evil, truth and deception, humility and arrogance,” Njiru stated. He further urged supporters, saying: “Zoea Rais Kalonzo mapema!”
Opposition alignment and emerging polls
Njiru’s remarks come at a time when opposition realignments continue to take shape ahead of the 2027 polls. A Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) survey released on May 14, 2026, indicated growing support for a unified opposition front against Ruto.
Among respondents supporting opposition candidates, a Kalonzo Musyoka–Edwin Sifuna ticket received 28 per cent support. A Kalonzo Musyoka–Rigathi Gachagua pairing followed at 25 per cent, while other combinations, such as Kalonzo Musyoka–Fred Matiang’i and Kalonzo Musyoka–Martha Karua, recorded lower support levels. Nine per cent of respondents were undecided, while another nine per cent supported none of the proposed options.

The findings point to Kalonzo Musyoka’s central position within opposition coalition discussions, with multiple potential alliances under consideration as parties explore possible joint tickets.
Kalonzo Musyoka’s political positioning
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has publicly declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027. Speaking on March 29, 2026, he said he had received a mandate to run and expressed confidence in opposition unity.
“I am running for President… We are in the process of forming a formidable coalition,” Kalonzo said, adding that he believes there is a strong public demand for political change.
He has also emphasised the need for a united opposition front, warning against vote splitting in the upcoming election. Kalonzo has positioned himself as part of broader discussions aimed at consolidating opposition support under a single presidential candidate.
Coalition negotiations
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has also emerged as a significant figure in opposition politics, advocating for unity among opposition leaders. Through the Linda Mwananchi movement, Sifuna has been mobilizing support across the country and calling for coordinated strategy ahead of 2027.
Other political figures, including Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, and Justin Muturi, have been linked to ongoing coalition talks as opposition leaders explore possible alliances.
Political analysts note that these developments reflect fluid negotiations within opposition ranks as parties position themselves for a competitive electoral contest.
With the election still over a year away, coalition talks are expected to continue as political players seek consensus on potential joint tickets and leadership structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
