Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir has expressed concern over the growing discontent among Kenyans and insisted that elected leaders listen to their constituents.

This statement comes in the wake of widespread protests against the Finance Bill 2024 that have seen significant public turnout across the country, including in Mombasa County.

He acknowledged the pain and frustration felt by many Kenyans and noted that the public's anger is on the rise.

"Young protesters exercising their democratic right to picket today paid me a visit in my office. I opened my doors to them and listened to what they had to say. Kenyans are hurting and public anger is growing. As leaders, it is our moral duty to listen," Nassir stated on his X account.

Elected on an Orange Democratic Movement ticket, Governor Nassir also condemned the recent abductions of youth involved in the protests, urging the police to adhere to constitutional principles.

"I join Kenyans in condemning the abduction of innocent youth and call upon security agencies to respect the Constitution. We have come too far and we have paid too heavy a price to return this country to the era of suppression and despotism," Nassir declared.

The recent abductions have sparked widespread condemnation in the country, with Kenya African National Union (KANU) chairman Gideon Moi describing the abductions as violent and troubling, asserting that they violate the rule of law.

He insisted that individuals suspected of crimes should be arrested and presented in court as required by law.

The situation remains tense as activists and concerned citizens continue to protest the Finance Bill and demand accountability for the recent abductions.
