Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has said his administration will construct a sports academy in Kapsabet Town in honour of the marathon hero Eliud Kipchoge.

The governor revealed that that they have kicked-started plans for the construction of a residential sports academy for athletes to be named Eliud Kipchoge who on Saturday made history by become the first man ever to run 42km marathon under two hours.

 Speaking in Kapsabet town, the governor said Kenyans were proud of Kipchoge for making history, therefore ought to be recognised and honoured.

“We are ready to honour our heroes like Kipchoge (Eliud) by setting up the sport academy named after him for making history. So we have started putting spanners into work towards this,” said Sang.

He said the academy will in come in handy for budding athletes to hone their skills and succeed as professional athletes like Kipchoge. Sang said they will be trained to follow the footsteps of the marathon hero, saying fortunes will change among them.

 Kipchoge made history on Saturday during INEOS159 Challenge in Vienna, Austria by running the 42KM race at a time of 1: 59:40;00.

He called on upcoming athletes to take sports as their professional careers and emulate Kipchoge if they hope to be successful and go places in their careers.

The Nandi governor called on the national government to move with speed and complete various stadia it had promised to build across the country saying sportsmen and women and budding ones require sports facilities in a bid for them to excel in the sector.

“Sports is bound to move to the next level if there are enough facilities so I am appealing to the national to complete constructions of stadia it had promised to build so that we realize development in sports,” said the governor.

Meanwhile Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony has called on the both the national and county governments to allocate enough resources to Sports in a bid to improve the sector.

The governor said there was need to improve the existing pitches and other sport facilities in a bid to take sports to the next level.
