Nakuru butchery shut after rotten meat found

Nakuru county has launched investigations on the hygiene practices of Al Jabri Butchery in the Central Business District (CBD) after rotten meat was discovered on the premises.

County Public Health officer George Gachomba while closing the facility noted the discovery of meat was a threat to consumers as it contravened the Public Health Act on food safety.

He said they expect a report from inspectors deployed at the facility working with police to unravel the mystery.

“I want to caution any butchery operator selling rotten or bush meat that officers will arrest them, confiscate the meat and destroy the goods,” said Gachomba.

He called on members of the public to buy meat from butcheries licensed by public health and be observant of conditions of the butcheries they buy at.

He said officers will intensify operations in all meat outlets in the county to ensure they comply with the regulations on food safety. “All meat must be slaughtered and inspected in licensed slaughterhouses. Once inspected, it should be transported to butcheries by meat carriers that meet the recommended standards,” he said.
