Three families in Thika, Kiambu county, are still struggling to unravel the disappearance of their kin a week ago.

Samuel Mungai, 28, Adnan Mohammed, 27, and Michael Njau Nyambura, 35, are reported to have gone missing on Friday, April 24 on their way to Nairobi from Thika while driving a hired silver Ractis vehicle registration number KCX 843M.

All their mobile phones were switched off between 4pm and 4.30pm after several efforts from their family members to confirm if they got to Nairobi safely.

A day after vanishing, police found the car the three were travelling in abandoned at a parking lot in Githurai 45 in good shape and took it to Githurai Police Station. The vehicle was later moved to Thika Police Station for inspection.

Mungai’s wife Monica Wangui said her husband, who is a car hire businessman and a football coach at a college in Thika town, left home on the fateful Friday at around 10am and informed her that he would return in the evening.

She said Mungai, a father of one, had not called home by 6pm and Wangui got troubled and called him only to find his phone was off.

 Less than three kilometres from Wangui’s home, Mohammed’s mother Amina Shaibu urged the relevant institutions to speed up the investigations to unravel the puzzle of her son’s disappearance.

Ann Njeri, Njau’s wife, said she last spoke to her husband on April 23 evening and he was to return home on the fateful Friday.

After the disappearance, families of the missing persons reported the matter to various police stations among them Githurai Kimbo Police Station, Githurai Mwiki Police Post and Thika Police Station. 

Thika Sub-county DCI Mohammed Bakari said the vehicle the three are claimed to have been travelling in had five occupants. 

He said two of the passengers alighted at Witeithie on Thika highway while the missing three continued with their journey using the highway.

 Bakari, who was addressing journalists outside his office over the weekend, said their data indicates the phones were switched off at Ruaraka in Nairobi.

He said police are working in collaboration with officers from the Cyber Crime unit in Nairobi to examine CCTV footage and mobile phone data belonging to the three.
