Mystery of murdered man, missing brother deepens
The family of a man who was shot at 36 times in broad day light at Mihang’o area, Utawala, Nairobi is now living in agony as the deceased’s brother remained missing for the fourth day.
The family of the deceased man Kevin Obinya, 24 said his elder brother Alfred Ouma Obinya, 29 is missing since last Thursday after he was picked from his house at Maji Mazuri area of Mwiki by some unknown gunmen dressed in bullet proof vests and armed with what looks like M5 machine guns.
In a CCTV footage, the gunmen are seen torturing Alfred, handcuffing him as they ask him to produce alleged guns in his possession before they leave with him.
The two brothers ran matatu business in the city. The family said they had bought two matatus, which they were running.
Yesterday, the father of the two brothers, Johannes Odhiambo Obinya, who has been visiting police stations, hospitals and mortuaries appealed to the gunmen who could be holding Alfred to release him on humanitarian grounds.
“All that we are praying for is that they should now release Alfred after killing the brother. We have moved from almost police stations in Nairobi in vain. Unfortunately everything is feigning ignorance about the whole incident,” Odhiambo told journalists yesterday.
Kevin was lured to his death on Friday September 23 at around 11.30 am hours after his elder brother, Alfred had been abducted. Kevin died in a hail of bullets as he met his former wife who was later kidnapped from the scene and abandoned in Tassia area at around 9pm the same Friday.
The family believes Kevin was killed as he sought to establish the whereabouts of his brother, Alfred who had been picked from his house earlier on at around 3am.
According to a family member, Kevin planned to seek to know the whereabouts of Alfred before he was killed.
About six heavily armed men went to Alfred’s residence where they were captured on a CCTV torturing and harassing him. One of the gunmen was heard asking him where he had hidden the gun.
Kevin had planned to visit Kasarani Police Station to establish if his brother was there. Before he could leave, he met a woman who locals said was his former wife along Gesora Road.
It was then that three cars pulled up and its occupants opened fire, killing him on the spot after pumping more than 36 bullets into his body.
The gunmen then picked up the woman who was with the deceased and drove off with her before they abandoned her later in the night in Tassia area unharmed but shocked.
The gunmen went close to the eyewitness and took away his phone, which was found a few metres from the body of the deceased, having been smashed.
Police arrived at the scene minutes later and found the victim’s bullet- riddled body near a building under construction on Gesora Road.
An examination on the body at the scene confirmed it had multiple gunshot wounds.
At the scene, police recovered 36 spent cartridges, two rounds of live ammunition and five bullet heads.
The local chief is said to have told police officers at Kayole Police Station where he reported he saw two motor vehicles, a cream Isuzu Trooper and a white Double Cabin whose registration he did not take, stop and its occupants shoot at the deceased who was accompanied by a woman before driving away at high speed.
“During the incident, the witness said he lay down with his hands raised up holding his mobile phone in surrender but the gunmen went up to him and grabbed his phone and smashed it and left with the woman who was in the companying the deceased,” the report stated.
The phone was later recovered next to the body of the deceased.
Among the items recovered at the scene of the shooting included recovered 27- 5.56mm spent cartridges, two live bullets, 9mm spent cartridges, five bullet heads and a crashed wrist watch cover which were stored as exhibits at Kayole Police Station.
The victim’s body was taken to City Mortuary where the family identified him on Saturday ahead of a planned autopsy.
“The man’s head is like a sieve. They pumped many bullets there indicating they wanted him dead,” said a member of the family who saw the body.
Police said they will investigate the incident.
Another officer claimed Kevin had a dark past with a criminal record but argued he was not sure it may have been the motive of the killing.
