Immediate former Laikipia East Member of Parliament (MP) Amin Deddy Mohamed has moved to court to challenge the election of The Service Party (TSP) party leader Festus Mwangi Kiunjuri as the area MP.

Mohamed, through his lawyers Rose Muthike and David Makworo, has filed a petition at the Nanyuki High Court claiming the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) did not conduct a free and fair election for the parliamentary seat.

In the petition, Mohamed has named the IEBC, Laikipia East Constituency Returning Officer Tabitha Gathoni, and Mwangi Kiunjuri as first, second, and third respondents respectively.

Further, Deddy wants the court to nullify the election and declare him as the winner arguing that his agents were locked out of various polling stations in the constituency during the vote counting exercise citing malice in the process.

According to him, he won in 100 polling stations against his competitor’s 91 polling stations adding that he has enough evidence to prove that both the returning officer and presiding officers colluded to bungle the August 9 polls.

Kiunjuri trounced Deddy after garnering 30,057 votes in the just concluded election.

Deddy, who contested on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, got 28,021 votes.

Both frontrunners in the race were from the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

After the election, the former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary said his victory was meant to boost the popularity of TSP.
