The National Police Service (NPS) is planning to deploy 3000 police officers to patrol Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Nakuru cities ahead of Christmas and New Year festivities.
Speaking during a press conference in Nairobi on Monday, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai said the officers will be drawn from Prisons Department.
“I appeal to Kenyans to be alert during the festive season and report anything of concern to the police,” Mutyambai said.
The police boss further asked Kenyans to avoid unnecessary travelling due to the threat of Covid-19.
“We have learnt from the Ministry of Health that we are not off the hook yet regarding Covid-19 situation in the country. If it is possible, spend the Christmas where you are,” he said.
Mutyambai also told Kenyans to avoid unnecessary travelling that causes congestion on roads and sometimes accidents that can wipe out all family members.
The IG was accompanied by officials from National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and Commissioner General of Prisons Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba.
Two weeks ago, Mutyambai cancelled leave days for all officers and recalled those who were off duty to resume work.
“I can confirm that all officers are back to work and ready to protect Kenyans this festive season,” he said.
