Mutyambai, Kinoti attend key security forum in Arusha
The Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai and the Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti have joined other regional police bosses to develop strategies to fight terror and other transnational organised crimes.
The East African Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) Annual General meeting is being held in Arusha and aims at empowering the countries to improve their capability to fight increasingly sophisticated forms of transnational organised crime and human trafficking and cybercrime
Key among the topics are the deployment of modern technology, enhancing formal cooperation to improve mutual legal assistance and information sharing among countries.
It takes place amid growing concerns about terrorism and transnational organised crime, crimes executed by using stealth technology, cross border arms proliferation and cattle rustling.
The police chiefs from Rwanda, Ethiopia, Burundi, Sychelles, and Sudan have warned that despite the calm and tranquillity, latest intelligence reports indicate that terror attacks are far from being over in the Eastern African region.
Mutyambai and Kinoti are accompanied by senior officers from the DCI, and Kenya and Administration Police services, mainly from the Counter-terrorism, gender, training, legal and cyber-crime committees.
The meeting, which was also attended by the Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock, further seeks to develop and sign memorandums of understanding, and help the chiefs share experiences and best practices.
It was officially opened yesterday by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Tanzania Kassim Majaliwa.
During the meeting the outgoing EAPCCO chairman Adil Mohammed who is the head of Sudan Police Forces handed over the chairmanship to Simon Nyakoro Sirro, the IG of the Tanzania Police Force.
Mr Sirro had earlier noted that though terrorism was a global problem, there were countries in Africa that also became victim of the vice including Kenya Somalia, Algeria and Nigeria
The joint security operations are some of the achievements of the organisation. However, though the EAPCCO cattle rustling protocol was drawn up in 2008, only Uganda has ratified the protocol.
