Museveni fierce critic Nyanzi sneaks into Kenya for asylum
Former Kampala Woman Member of Parliament candidate Dr Stella Nyanzi and her family over the weekend silently sneaked into Nairobi, Kenya, from Uganda to seek political asylum.
People Daily has established that the Ugandan academic cum politician arrived in Nairobi by bus on Saturday evening and was whisked to an unknown destination.
Speaking to People Daily yesterday evening, her lawyer Prof George Luchiri Wajackoyah said that the former research fellow at Makerere University was currently seeking political asylum in Kenya.
“All I can say for now is that she is currently in Kenya. More details will be revealed with time,” Luchiri said.
Nyanzi has in the recent past maintained that she was not in any way going to be thrown in prison during President Yoweri Museveni’s regime.
A source privy to the matter, yesterday said plans were underway to have Nyanzi, a big critic of President Museveni’s regime, arrived in Kenya together with her three children.
According to her, the children who are now in a safe house in Nairobi have in the past been targeted by the police reason she decided to flee her home country together with them.
Her journey from Uganda as briefed by a source privy to the matter was so secretive that the Ugandan authority was on Monday caught unawares.
“She crossed into Kenya in disguise and managed to avoid being detected by security agents, it was not easy, but we finally arrived safely,” the source said.
On Thursday and Friday last week, Nyanzi was held up in a meeting with her family members who supported her plans of fleeing the country.
According to Dr Nyanzi, she had plunged into the elections without minding about her children and there was need to plan on the best way she could ensure that they were safe.
“Nobody teaches anyone how to recover after losing in the elections. And because I plunged into the elections campaign with my children, I needed to find strategies of helping them cope with the loss of the election. My loss was their loss, too,” Nyanzi said.
In a Facebook post last week, the politician hinted that she was planning something with her children but never revealed that she was headed to Kenya.
In September 2019, Nyanzi crossed into Kenya and she was arrested and charged with flouting Covid-19 rules.
During the visit, she met a number of local politicians and also visited Kibra in Nairobi.
