Murkomen warns politicians using boda boda operators to fuel insecurity
By Kiprono Keileb, September 12, 2025Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has promised a thorough and impartial crackdown on rogue boda boda operators in Kisii, who he said have been used to advance political agendas.
Speaking at the 39th Jukwaa la Usalama forum on Friday, September 12, 2025, Murkomen said the sector is a key driver of economic growth but warned that it has been hijacked by selfish individuals and politicians.
“Some of the boda boda operators are being hijacked for criminal purposes, in the name of political support, and it is on both sides of the political divide,” Murkomen said, highlighting the role political manipulation has played in fueling tensions within the sector.

He cited recent clashes between rival boda boda groups in Kisii as an example of how such exploitation has led to violent incidents: “The chaos with rival boda boda groups led to ugly incidents,” he said
The CS called for stronger collaboration between regulatory and security agencies to ensure proper oversight.
“We want NTSA to work together with relevant authorities in the county and national government to license, regulate and punish those involved in criminal activities,” Murkomen said, emphasising the importance of coordinated action.
Murkomen stressed that the crackdown will not target all operators but will focus on those engaged in criminal behaviour or facilitating violence for political gain. He reassured law-abiding bodaboda operators that the operation is meant to protect their interests and restore order.
He also highlighted the economic significance of the sector, noting that boda boda operators provide employment and facilitate trade. Murkomen warned that when the sector is exploited for political purposes, it threatens both public safety and economic stability.

The Interior CS called on all stakeholders, including county officials, security agencies, and the community, to cooperate fully with authorities.
“Anyone found facilitating criminal activity, regardless of political affiliation, will face legal consequences,” he said, underlining that the operation will be impartial and comprehensive.
The 39th Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Kisii brought together security officials, county leaders, and community members to discuss key safety challenges, including traffic safety, organised crime, and youth involvement in illegal activities. Murkomen used the platform to outline government plans to regulate the boda boda sector and curb its political exploitation.
The Interior Ministry confirmed that the operation aims to restore public confidence, ensure safety, and preserve the economic potential of the boda boda sector while punishing criminal conduct.
