Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen now claims that former Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director (MD) Alex Gitari wanted to exit from the position.

Speaking during an interview with Spice FM on Thursday, December 14, 2023, the CS claimed that Gitari approached him alleging that the sabotage at the institution was too much and that he was unable to continue dealing with the problems that he had with human resource administration.

The CS also revealed that Gitari complained of incompetence within the sector and that he was not getting support from within. He (Gitari) subsequently told him that he had no problem taking an early exit from the position.

When I had a candid discussion with the former MD he told me that the sabotage in the institution was so much that he was unable to continue dealing with the problems that he had with human resource administration across the place.

“He also told me that in the whole place, there were several people who were not doing their jobs, and people were not pulling their weight in fact he was not getting support from different agencies within the airport so he told me had no problem if he can take an early exit from the position,” the CS said.

Murkomen’s revelation comes months after he terminated Gitari’s contract and appointed Henry Ogoye as acting Managing Director.

At the time, the CS made the changes after a blackout that affected activities at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

“The contract of Alex Gitari who had been the managing director of Kenya Airports Authority has been terminated. His position is to be taken over by Henry Ogoye who has been Head of Corporate Affairs,” the CS said at the time.
