Murkomen: Persons of interest in Kyalo Mbobu’s fatal shooting identified
By Kenneth Mwenda, September 11, 2025Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have identified several persons of interest in the murder of prominent Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the development on Thursday, September 11, 2025, while expressing his personal grief at the killing.
“We have been in touch with the DCI since this issue has happened, and I’m happy to note that there is some progress that has been made.”
“Some persons of interest have been identified; those persons of interest are being interrogated, and so many others are going to be sought. I pray that the DCI is going to be successful,” he said.
Mbobu was shot dead in Nairobi on the night of September 9, 2025. According to witnesses, assailants ambushed him in a drive-by shooting before escaping.

A post-mortem conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed that Mbobu sustained eight gunshot wounds, most to the right side of his body. Two bullets were recovered for ballistic analysis.
Oduor said the close-range shots caused severe injuries to the jugular vein and spine, leaving him with no chance of survival.
“It’s a terrible thing that happened in our country that someone assassinated or killed a very prominent, hard-working citizen of this republic who was going about his business peacefully. We do not know the motive yet,” Murkomen said.
He described Mbobu as his teacher and friend, recalling his dedication as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi’s School of Law.
“Anybody who studied evidence at the University of Nairobi School of Law remembers his diligence, commitment, hard work, and clarity of mind. Very eloquent, very knowledgeable, and has left a big legacy in our country, particularly in the legal profession.
“His book on evidence and his research and works in the field of law shall always be remembered in this country for many, many years,” he said.

Public assistance
Murkomen added that DCI detectives are interrogating persons of interest and pursuing other leads. He urged Kenyans with information to come forward and assist investigators.
“We thank the eyewitnesses who have already given information. I encourage more Kenyans to help in the process so that the truth comes out,” he stated.
The Interior CS stressed that the government must investigate crimes with equal urgency, regardless of a victim’s social status.
“It is not in our interest to only resolve cases involving prominent persons. The same speed must be applied in every case,” he said.
He pledged that all resources would be used to ensure justice for Mbobu and his family.
