Murkomen congratulates Ida Odinga on UNEP ambassadorial nomination
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has congratulated Canon Ida Odinga following her nomination by President William Ruto as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The nomination was formally announced on January 23, 2026, and forwarded to the National Assembly for approval in line with constitutional procedures.
Murkomen described the appointment as timely, fitting, and well thought out. He highlighted Ida Odinga’s extensive contributions to Kenya’s socio-economic development, particularly in education, women’s rights, and advocacy for inclusive governance.
“@IdaOdinga has contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of our country, particularly in the spheres of education, women’s rights, and the clamour for inclusive governance,” Murkomen stated.
He added that her experience, stature, and commitment would strengthen Kenya’s environmental diplomacy and enhance the country’s position internationally. The role will see Ida Odinga representing Kenya at UNEP, headquartered in Nairobi.
Honouring Raila Odinga’s legacy
Murkomen also noted that the nomination honours the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away in October 2025, whose lifelong dedication to justice, environmental protection and national unity continues to shine a light in the country.

Well wishes ahead of vetting
Extending his congratulations, Murkomen wished Ida Odinga well ahead of her appearance before the National Assembly for vetting and potential confirmation. “I extend to her my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes as she appears before the National Assembly for approval,” he said.
Other leaders have also hailed her appointment. Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris extended warm congratulations, praising her as an incredible mentor who is always graceful, deeply grounded, and manages everything with wisdom and depth.
ODM Coast women leaders, including Likoni MP Mishi Mboko, welcomed the nomination as a significant recognition of Kenyan women’s contributions, while Prof Makau Mutua commended President Ruto for recognising her commanding abilities and stature as the perfect voice for Kenya at the global environmental agency.
The nomination comes amid ongoing discussions around Kenya’s broad-based government, which was formed in 2024 and included members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Ida Odinga has remained a prominent figure in public life for decades, both as Raila Odinga’s spouse and as a key advocate for education, democracy, and gender equity.
