Murkomen condemns chaos witnessed during June 25 demos
By Kiplagat Sang, June 26, 2025Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has condemned the chaos he says was witnessed during the June 25 demonstrations.
Kenyans demonstrated in a number of counties, but it was Nairobi that was the epicentre of the demonstrations. In a bid to assess the damage caused, Murkomen paid a visit to a number of businesses in the city on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
“This morning, I assessed the situation in our capital city, prioritizing a visit to small-scale traders affected by yesterday’s protests in Nairobi. I was taken aback by the unfortunate incidents of violence that marred the protests. What began as a constitutionally protected expression of public concern was sadly hijacked by organized gangs.
“This kind of lawlessness not only undermines the spirit of our democracy but also causes unnecessary suffering for innocent Kenyans. Hundreds of traders have been affected, and businesses and livelihoods built through hard work and dedication have been lost,” Murkomen said in a statement on X.
“As a government, our hearts go out to the traders, workers, and residents whose livelihoods and services were disrupted. We are working to restore normalcy, enhance security, and support recovery efforts,” he added.
The CS was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General-APS Gilbert Masengeli, senior security officers in Nairobi, and other leaders.

LSK report
After the demonstrations, the Law Society of Kenya gave their report revealing the number of casualties.
“The Law Society of Kenya, Police Reforms Working Group, and the Kenya Medical Association express condolences to the families of the eight protesters who were killed today. At least 400 others were treated, with 83 of them referred to specialised treatment for serious injuries. At least 8 protesters have been treated for gunshot wounds. Three of the injured include police officers.
“While these figures are confirmed by medics and human rights defenders, sadly, the exact figures may only be known in the course of time,” the LSK statement said.
