Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that the Migori Officer Commanding Station (OCS) who attended a meeting while looking drunk has been hospitalised for medical tests, with further action to follow depending on the outcome of the assessments.

Speaking at the 369th Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Kisii, Murkomen provided details on the ongoing investigation, emphasising that authorities are carefully examining whether the incident stems from mental health challenges or indiscipline.

“The Migori OCS who attended a meeting while drunk has been taken to the hospital for medical tests. Assessments are ongoing to establish whether it stems from mental health challenges or indiscipline. Based on the findings, He will either undergo rehabilitation and redeployment or face disciplinary action accordingly,” Murkomen said.

The CS’s statement comes amid growing public attention on incidents of misconduct in the police service, with calls for accountability and transparency in handling officers involved in such behaviour.

While Murkomen did not disclose the exact circumstances leading to the OCS attending the meeting under the influence, he stressed that the police service has established procedures to deal with such cases.

Murkomen also highlighted the role of medical assessments in distinguishing between personal failings and possible health-related issues. This ensures that officers receive appropriate support, including rehabilitation, while safeguarding public trust in law enforcement institutions.

“This approach balances accountability and care, making sure that any action taken reflects both the severity of the misconduct and the well-being of the officer,” security analysts said, noting that Murkomen’s clarification signals a structured approach to discipline in the police service.

The incident has sparked discussions across social and traditional media platforms, with citizens emphasising the need for strict adherence to professional conduct, especially among senior officers. Some have argued that rehabilitation is necessary in cases where mental health challenges contribute to professional lapses, while others stress that indiscipline must be met with strict disciplinary measures to maintain order and public confidence.

As the investigation continues, Murkomen assured that the Interior Ministry is closely monitoring the situation to ensure due process is followed. The assessment results will determine whether the officer undergoes rehabilitation and redeployment or faces formal disciplinary action, sending a message to other officers about the importance of professionalism.

The Migori OCS case underscores the dual responsibility of the police service: to maintain discipline and uphold public trust, while also providing support to officers facing personal or health-related challenges. Murkomen’s handling of the matter signals a commitment to accountability, transparency, and structured intervention in Kenya’s security sector.
