Residents of Murang’a have given diverse reactions to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy as he highlighted his scorecard during Madaraka Day celebrations at Uhuru Garden.

A section of the locals hailed the President saying he has initiated several projects in the county that they have benefited from.

Mary Njeri, a resident from Ithanga in lower Gatanga, said they have benefited from irrigation project which has enabled them to do farming throughout the year.

Njeru also said they have, for the first time in several decades, got piped water after the completion of multi-million Gatanga Water project.

“We have water both for irrigation and domestic use and this is one of the reasons we can say Uhuru has delivered his promise to us.

“We also got the first tarmac road and this has made transport in the area easier” she said.

Peter Maina, a resident of Kiharu, said he has benefited from the Kazi Mtaani program which was initiated by the government to cushion the youth from the big rate of unemployment.

Maina said the program helped thousands of the youth in the area who were able to put a plate of food on the table.

“We were being paid Sh400 per day which helped us to meet our basic needs,” he said.

Further, he said the Ajira Program has helped create digital opportunities for the youth and they are making a living out of it.

“The government may not have fulfilled all its promises but it has made efforts to cater for the young people,” he added.

‘Uhuru failed in tackling graft’

Alice Wambui on the other hand however feels the Uhuru government has failed in it’s war against graft and no firm action has been taken on the culprits.

“Few individuals rooted billions of money under his watch and the funds would have been used in various development projects,” she said.

“Corruption has also seen the country suffer major economic set back due to the graft and this does not set a good record about him,” she added.

Addressing the residents during the Madaraka day celebrations at Ihura stadium Murang’a county commissioner Kariuki Ngumi said the Jubilee government has initiated several projects which have benefited the locals.

Ngumo highlighted improved road network, water and power connection to the residents as some of the projects the residents are enjoying courtesy of the government.
