Murang’a County government projects to collect Sh1 billion from own-source revenue for the financial year 2023/2024.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata (pictured) said he is largely banking on the automation of the systems in the county which will help curb theft of resources. He said so far the county collected Sh628 million in the 2022/2023 financial year. This is up from Sh520 million collected by the previous government.

The governor who was speaking during an address to the County Assembly, said the automation of the services by the county has helped streamline revenue collection as no money is going into people’s pockets. “Automation of revenue collection service has helped us realize this achievement and I believe we can achieve the Sh1 billion target set for next year” said the governor.

“Between July 1, 2022 to December 31 2022, we had raised Sh175 million from our own source revenue” he added.

He cited Murang’a District Hospital where he said average daily collection has increased to Sh400,000 from Sh80,000, adding that the number of patients have also doubled after the automation of the system. The governor said the increased revenue is helping the county to manage its recurrent bills despite the delay of disbursement of funds from the national government.

Pending bills

Further, Kang’ata added, the county has managed to settle all the development pending bills amounting to Sh342 million after they were verified by the audit committee on pending bills.

He said the county is engaging the remaining contractors to come up with a payment plan for the Sh300 million which will be cleared by the end of this year. He also said the pending bills which were rejected by the committee are still under scrutiny after the contractors filed an appeal.

“For those pending bills that were nor verified, fairness demanded that they be given a chance to appeal to the negligible pending bills which verified Sh40 million worth of pending bills” he said. “The remaining Sh425 million pending bills were committed back to the procurement for further scrutiny and we are awaiting for feedback,” added Kang’ata.
