By , November 28, 2025

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has described the launch of the Nairobi–Nakuru–Eldoret–Malaba Superhighway as one of the most transformative infrastructure projects Kenya has embarked on in recent years, saying it will drastically cut travel time and unlock economic opportunities across several regions.

Mudavadi, in a statement on Friday, November 28, 2025, during the unveiling of the first phase of the project, said the road will reshape mobility, strengthen trade routes, and boost livelihoods for millions who rely on the busy transport corridor.

He noted that the superhighway is expected to ease congestion along the Nairobi–Western Kenya route, which handles heavy commercial traffic every day.

“The construction of the Nairobi–Nakuru–Eldoret–Malaba Superhighway marks a bold step in reshaping the heartbeat of our nation’s transport network, this dual carriageway will not only ease congestion along one of Kenya’s busiest corridors, it will open new horizons for trade, tourism, and investment across the Western Kenya region, from the Rift Valley to Western and Nyanza.” the statement reads

He said the first phase will run from Rironi in Kiambu County to Gilgil and onward to Mau Summit, serving as a foundation for a modern transport artery.

“The first phase stretches from Rironi in Kiambu County to Gilgil and onward to the Mau Summit in Nakuru County, laying the foundation for a modern transport artery that will link communities, strengthen businesses, and fuel regional growth,” he stated.

Mudavadi added that the 139-kilometre stretch will be constructed over two years by a consortium of China Road and Bridge Corporation and the NSSF Board of Trustees.

“This transformative 139-kilometre section will be constructed over two years at a cost of $863 million (KSh112 billion),” the statement reads.

He further explained that the road forms part of a grand vision to create a seamless dual carriage all the way to Malaba, with an additional branch linking Mau Summit, Kericho, Kisumu, and Busia.

“It forms part of a grander vision, a seamless dual carriageway running all the way to Eldoret and Malaba, with an additional branch connecting the Mau Summit, Kericho, Kisumu, and Busia corridor,” he said.

Mudavadi emphasised the impact the road will have on travel time once complete, saying it will significantly reduce travel time.

“Once complete, motorists will soon make the journey from Nairobi to Busia or Malaba in just five hours, a dramatic improvement from the current nine to twelve. This is the kind of impact that unlocks opportunities, strengthens families, and connects our people like never before,” he stated
