Mt.Kenya leaders select five members to lead BBI campaigns

Leaders from the Mt. Kenya region have selected five members who will spearhead the Building Bridges Initiative(BBI) campaigns in the area in a bid to popularize it.
The team shall be led by Kirinyaga senator Charles Kibiru assisted by Igembe North Member of Parliament(MP) Maoka Maore.
The team was selected after a three-hour closed door meeting in one of the hotels in Murang’a on Saturday.
Addressing the media after the meeting, National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya said the team with the help of other leaders shall educate people in the region on the contents of the BBI.
Others elected were Embu Woman Rep Jane Wanjuki as secretary, Limuru MP Peter Mwathi as organising secretary and Ruth Mwaniki (Kigumo MP) as his assistant.
Kimunya said there lacks adequate information on the report which has caused confusion to the people.
He said they shall do massive sensitization to the people before a referendum for the same is conducted.
“We want people to understand what is contained in the document and the benefits they stand to gain from it,” said Kimunya.
“If people get to know the content of the report, then they will understand why we are telling them to support it,” he added.
He said the leaders have agreed to work as a team to ensure BBI gains popularity and its accepted by the locals.
He said out of the 91 leaders from the region, only 15 are not working with them but efforts are made to pull them back.
Kibiru on his part said there have been deliberate efforts to misinform people about the BBI to discredit and make it unpopular in the region.
He said his team shall reach out to governors, MCAs, church and opinion leaders to help in educating people about it.
“We shall use all available platforms to teach people about it because we want them to understand what it entails,” he said.
Kibiru said the BBI hold the key to securing economic and political stability in the country which are key elements in development.
He said this is a golden opportunity given to make amendment to the constitution to fix some of the issues which have been ailing the country for ages.
He said this is not a political contest as it focuses on helping the common person and thus the leaders should join hands in ensuring it sails through.
