Members of parliament have given their approval to the Wundanyi Resource Cultural and Youth Centre in Taita Taveta County, which is estimated to cost Ksh141 million.

This was after the National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture made an inspection tour of the facility.

In a statement on Saturday, August 16, 2025, the Parliament of Kenya indicated that the committee led by Matungulu Member of Parliament Stephen Mule said the visit was part of its oversight role to ensure taxpayers’ money is well spent on the flagship project.

“We are here to confirm whether there is value for money in the construction of this centre, which has been allocated Ksh141 million,” Mule stated.

“So far, we are satisfied with the workmanship and progress,” he added.

According to ministry officials, the government contracted the project for Ksh140,989,860 and works commenced on March 7, 2023.

By June 30, 2025, Ksh84.15 million had been spent, reflecting 60 per cent completion.

Targeting young people

The project is being implemented by the State Department for Youth Affairs and the Creative Economy.

It is expected to provide young people with access to resources, training, and opportunities in culture and talent development.

Speaking after inspecting the facility, Mule explained that once completed, it will play a key role in preserving community traditions and boost the cultural profile.

“What is being built here is not just a facility, but a modern shrine that will be of immense benefit to both the community and the country,” he said.

The committee, however, called for the release of the remaining funds to allow the facility to be completed on time.

On his side, the area MP, Danson Mwashako, lauded the contractors for their professionalism and for working on the project without sparking fears of mismanagement of resources and corruption.
