MPs demand action over matatu incident
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) have been put on the spot by the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), for failing to take action against a matatu tout who assaulted a woman on Thika Road.
MPs who addressed the media at Parliament buildings yesterday condemned the incident involving a Bybuss Trans Sacco tout harassing a passenger after she complained that he had failed to drop her at the designated stage.
Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda said the public transport sector is notorious for perpetrating gender-based violence, which include physical violence, sexual harassment, verbal abuse and other violations that affect the dignity and well-being of women and girls.
“It is unacceptable for any service provider to engage in criminal acts against other persons even where there are disagreements,” she said.
Maragua MP Mary Wamaua said that it is the responsibility to treat everyone with respect.
Nominated Senator Veronica Maina said they were disappointed that players the matatu sector had not come out to condemn the incident.
Nominated Senator Miraj Abdullahi called on the Matatu Owners Association and the Bybuss Trans Sacco to take appropriate action, including a formal apology to the affected passenger and holding the responsible individual accountable for his actions.
