MP Owen Baya’s mother dies
By Cynthia Lodite, March 31, 2026Mama Dorothy Baya Mweri, the mother of the deputy leader of the majority side and Kilifi North Member of Parliament, Owen Baya, has passed away.
The National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, confirmed the death on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, during the National Assembly proceedings.
Wetang’ula informed the House that the late Dorothy Baya passed away on the evening of Monday, March 31, 2026.
“Members, on a sad note, I wish to inform you that I have received news of the passing on of Mama Dorothy Baya Mweri, the beloved mother of the Deputy leader of the majority party and Kilifi North Member of Parliament, Honourable Owen Baya,” Wetang’ula announced.

Profound loss
The National Assembly Speaker described her demise as a profound loss not only to her family but also to all who were close to her.
“The evening of Monday 30th March 2026, her departure is a profound loss not only to her family but also to all who were close to her,” he added.
On his part, the Speaker affirmed the National Assembly’s solidarity with the family as they navigate the difficult time.
“This moment of sorrow, we stand in solidarity with the Deputy leader and family, offering our support and prayers as they navigate this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace and may the family find strength, comfort and peace in the legacy of love and dignity she leaves behind,” Wetang’ula added
