National Assembly Chief Whip Silvanus Osoro has hit out national leaders that he claimed were preaching tribalism, saying this negates the spirit of nationalism.

Osoro, the South Mugirango MP, said it was wrong for leaders elected to serve Kenyans to focus on their tribes at the expense of development.

The MP spoke at Etago stadium in his constituency during Madaraka Day celebrations. He was joined by Kisii County Woman Representative Dorice Donya Aburi, County Commissioner Joseph Kibet and area Ward Representative Felix Ombati.

“We fear approaching such leaders to discuss national issues because they will speak about their tribes” Osoro told the congregation.

The lawmaker told leaders to respect President William Ruto and support him as he works to serve Kenyans and improve their lives.

He implored elected leaders to shun complaining and instead utilise public funds channelled to their respective electoral areas to offer services and implement development projects to benefit Kenyans.

“I challenge Kenyans not to listen to stories but instead hold their leaders to account for the public funds they receive every year,” Osoro said.

Public funds

Echoing Osoro’s sentiments, Donya appealed to elected leaders to use public forums to explain to residents how they have used public funds.

She noted that the ongoing debate on the Finance Bill 2024 was diverting Kenyans from demanding better roads, access to clean drinking water and other services.

“Members of the public have a right to know how their taxes are being utilised to improve their lives” Donya said.

Elijah Obebo of the Kisii County Public Service Board, urged the government to fight drug and alcohol abuse.

Obebo, who represented Governor Simba Arati, said illegal drugs and the illicit brew were ruining the lives of residents.
