By , December 17, 2024

Embakasi East Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has condemned the demolitions that took place in Nyama Villa, Kayole, in the Embakasi Central Constituency on the morning of Monday, December 16, 2024.

Bulldozers landed on several homes in the area, leaving dozens of families homeless.

Taking to his official social media accounts on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, the vocal lawmaker called out the government, saying that the demolitions must be stopped.

Babu Owino stated that it was inhumane for the government to push someone to claim a parcel of land just because it wanted to put up affordable houses.

“This government must stop punishing Kenyans by demolishing their houses. All demolitions must be stopped. It is inhumane to push someone to claim a parcel of land just because you want to build unaffordable houses.,” Babu Owino stated.

Wamuchomba condemns demolitions

Babu Owino joins his Githunguri counterpart Gathoni Wamuchomba, who has also condemned the incident.

Wamuchomba, in a statement shared via her official X account on Monday, December 16, 2024, stated that citizens do not have to lose their livelihoods for a parcel of land to be reclaimed.

She termed the way used to evict the affected families as inhumane.

“Reclaiming Private or public land citizens don’t have to lose their livelihoods to bulldozers. Watching an elderly person crying is so disturbing. I condemn the inhumane way of eviction.

“Thank you, MCA. Joy for standing in the gap. Arresting and apprehending the MCA holding a court order to stop. The unjust process just shows how impunity is entrenched in our security systems. This shall one day come to pass,” Wamuchomba stated.

Families left homeless

Dozens of families in Nyama Villa, a settlement in Nairobi’s Kayole estate, were left homeless following a series of demolitions that began on Monday, December 16, 2024.

The demolitions stem from a long-standing land dispute, dating back to 2002, between a real estate company and individuals who are alleged to be occupying the land illegally.

The operation unfolded swiftly, with bulldozers tearing through stone walls and pillars, leaving residents helpless and unable to salvage their belongings.

Many families were caught off guard, witnessing the destruction in despair.
