By , July 20, 2025

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga on Saturday, July 19, 2025, revealed predictions made by the late former Karachuonyo Member of Parliament Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo.

Speaking after visiting her family, Wanga described the late Asiyo as a trailblazer who paved the way for women leaders to rise to top positions in the country.

Wanga noted that Asiyo was among the guests who graced her inauguration in 2022, and she was full of praise for her leadership. The governor told a section of the press that the veteran politician predicted that she was destined to deliver credible and transformative results in the region.

“I remember her at my inauguration in 2022; she came and said very profound things. She said that I was going to do things that have not been done,” Wanga stated.

“She was promising the people of Homa Bay that I was going to do things that have never been done. It was like a prophecy that has perhaps come to pass. I hope she is proud that the women are now in places that we would never be,” she revealed, indicating that she played a vital role in fighting for the gender balance rule.

In a subsequent statement, Wanga informed the nation that Asiyo would be buried on August 8, 2025.

“As preparations for the late Hon. Mama Phoebe Asiyo’s funeral get underway, we took a moment today to extend our condolences to her family and the residents of Kanyaluo at her home in Wikondiek,” Wanga’s statement read in part.

“Our beloved Mama Phoebe Asiyo will be laid to rest on 8th August 2025. May the good Lord comfort all who knew and loved her.”

Asiyo’s death

She died in a hospital in North Carolina, United States of America, at the age of 93 years. According to her son Caesar Asiyo, the veteran politician died of a stroke while in the USA visiting her family.

Caesar said Dr. Asiyo developed a stroke, and it became difficult for medics to manage her condition at her age.

She was re-elected to Parliament in 1992 after the inception of the multi-party system on a Ford Kenya ticket until 1997, when the late Paul Adhu Awiti took over.

Before serving as the MP for Karachuonyo, Asiyo joined the Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation in 1953, before being elected chairperson in 1958.
