Mother of one defies odds to shine in exam
Purity Mwirigi is among candidates who have performed well in the just-released 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results.
Mwirigi, 32, and a mother of one, sat for the exams at Magumoni Girls Secondary School in Tharaka-Nithi county and scored a mean grade of B.
Speaking to People Daily yesterday, Mwirigi says she is excited that despite the challenges she faced in pursuit of education, she performed exemplary well.
“I am grateful to God and to my husband for supporting and seeing me through the exams that I sat for while in pain after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease,” says Mwirigi.
In September last year, she fell ill and was admitted to various hospitals in Isiolo, Meru and finally Karen where she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that slowed her down and affected her memory. Despite that, she did not give up on her resolve to go back to school.
She enrolled at Kisima Mixed Secondary School in Timau, Nyandarua county but later dropped out due to financial challenges.
As the first born in a family of eight children, Mwirigi took up menial jobs to support her siblings and ensured they enrolled in school.
