Most students prefer education courses – report
Most students joining higher learning institutions are enrolling for Bachelor of Education program, a new report shows.
The program, according Zetech University Dean of School of Education, Arts and Social Sciences Dr. Owen Ngumi attracted more students at a time when Kenya continues to grapple with a huge shortage of teachers.
Ngumi said with the ongoing implementation of Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), the teacher’s deficit gap could continue increasing as the new system requires deployment of more teachers than usual.
Speaking at the school, Ngumi stated with the high number of students seeking to become teachers, the university has been compelled to review its internal decisions on programs offering to align with the changing demands in the job market.
“The school is currently reviewing its teacher training programme to align it to CBC and it is also spearheading the training of the rest of the faculty in the University to prepare them for entry of CBC cohorts into the University,’’ said the dean.
The university said other programs that come second and third respectively are Bachelor of International Relations and Diplomacy.
The university which has its main campus in Ruiru, Kiambu county said its School of Education, Arts and Social Sciences has led from the front in initiating highly rated programmes which have increasingly become popular due to their learner-centered approach and focus on industry performance.
Presently, the private university is among the leading trainers in degree and diploma courses in the area of human services.
Other most sought programs are Diploma and Bachelor’s degree courses in Hospitality and Tourism management.
The above is closely followed by Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with Technology, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Technology, and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Technology, Community health programs,
