Trade, Investment and Industry Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria has now shifted blame to former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i over China Square’s operations in Kenya.

Kuria, who has called on China Square to cease its operations in Kenya, questioned why Matiangi granted Chinese traders at China Square work permits.

“Dear Fred Okengo Matiangi. Why did you issue work permits to the Chinese traders at China Square at Unicity?” Moses Kuria tweeted.

Kuria had earlier revealed that he was in talks with Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina to buy out the lease for the retailer currently trading at Unicity Mall along Thika Road and hand it over to local traders.

“I have today given an offer to Prof Wainaina the VC Kenyatta University to buy out the lease for China Square, Unicity Mall and hand it over to the Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa l and Eastleigh Traders Association,” the CS stated.

The Trade CS noted that Chinese investors should not trade in Kenya.

“We welcome Chinese investors to Kenya but as manufacturers, not traders.”

China Square is the newest one-stop mall in the country. It has been trending on social media as Kenyans marvel at how commodities imported from China are being sold at affordable prices.
