Morara calls for bold action over surge in drug abuse among Kenyan youth
By Mabonga Makhanu, December 2, 2025Civil educator Morara Kebaso has raised concerns over the growing alcoholism and drug abuse menace among young people, urging leaders to address the situation before it spirals further out of control.
In a statement shared for the youthful activist on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Kebaso said the country can no longer ignore the rising cases of drunk and disorderly behaviour among the youth, noting that the problem has reached alarming levels.
He stressed that leaders must speak openly about the issue without fear of backlash, insults or online trolling.
According to Kebaso, substance abuse is taking a dangerous turn, with alcohol and marijuana becoming easily accessible. He said weed has now been baked into cookies and cakes, making it more enticing and turning many young people into what he described as “zombies”.
“As leaders in our generation, we should start talking about these issues without fear of being insulted or trolled. Drunkardness among the youth is becoming a pandemic. “Weed is like candy baked into cookies and cakes, turning youth into zombies,” Morara stated.
Gambling addiction
He also pointed to the growing addiction to betting and gambling, saying the habit is consuming salaries and draining small business income, leaving many families struggling.
Kebaso added that online fraud has, worryingly, become an “acceptable career” for some youths, a trend he warned will destroy the moral fabric of society if left unchecked.

Kebaso called for honest conversations among young people themselves, saying that even as they push for reforms and demand a better country, they must remain alive and sober to enjoy the future they are fighting for.
He noted that opportunities will only be meaningful if the youth are in the right state of mind to take advantage of them.
He warned that if the current behaviour continues, the country risks losing many young people before their time, urging immediate action from leaders, communities and families.
“Betting and gambling are getting out of hand. It is decimating salaries and revenues from small businesses. Online fraud is now an acceptable career. We need to talk to each other youth to youth. Even as we fight for a new Kenya, we need to be alive to enjoy it.” Morara added,
Morara’s recent political moves

There comes a time when Morara has been so vocal on the direction the country is taking, despite announcing retirement from politics, even proposing a joint political formation between him, Embakasi East legislator Babu Owino, and his Kiharu counterpart, Ndindi Nyoro.
