Mombasa clinical officers issue strike warning

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has issued a fresh strike warning in Mombasa, citing what they say are glaring inequalities and blatant mistreatment of its members under Governor Abdulswamad Nassir’s administration.

Narrir’s administration had brazenly ignored a July 9 return-to-work agreement ordered by the Employment and Labour Relations Court, said KUCO national chairman Peterson Wachira.

The county, Wachira claimed, had refused to pay clinical officers their full three-month salaries and excluded them from promotions.

“In our agreement, we stipulated that the county must pay all the salaries withheld during our strike,” Wachira explained at a press briefing outside the governor’s offices at Treasury Square in Mombasa.

“However, we recently received a letter from the county secretary stating they would only pay salaries from July 9 onwards, which is against our agreement. The court directed us to negotiate how the county should effect payment and lift all disciplinary actions.”

Significant disruption

In light of these developments, Wachira warned, the county should brace for a significant healthcare disruption, promising an “earthshaking statement” to the administration.

“We are here to listen to the governor. We expect concrete reasons for his failure to honour the agreement. If we don’t get a satisfactory response, we have two options: paralyse healthcare or go back to court,” Wachira
