Only two papers, English Language and Kenyan Sign Language Composition recorded an improvement in performance in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education compared to last year.

According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, eight papers, namely English Composition, Kiswahili, Kiswahili Insha, Kenya Sign Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Religious Education recorded a slight drop in performance in 2023 compared to last year.

“In terms of gender, the performance of male and female candidates was comparable in Social Studies and Religious Education. However, female candidates performed slightly better than their male counterparts in English, Kiswahili and Kenyan Sign Language,” said the CS when he released the results yesterday.

Male candidates performed slightly better than their female counterparts in Mathematics and Science.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) engaged the services of 5,692 examiners during marking of the English Composition, Kiswahili Insha, and Kenyan Sign Language Composition.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr David Njengere lauded all field officer who rendered their services to ensure the successful administration of the 2023 KCPE exam.

Registration guidelines

He also mentioned Vihiga County Education team for their exemplary work in doing e-registration of 2023 candidates, who adhered most to the registration guidelines for the exam. As a result, the county had no late registration cases, with Njengere urging all the other counties to emulate this exemplary leadership, which also helps with improving efficiency in the administration of examinations.

“I want to thank the 28,533 KCPE centre managers who have ensured that both KCPE and KPSEA examination and assessment happen in the centres seamlessly, despite the adverse weather conditions that were experienced in some parts of the country,” said Njengere.
