Militants kill two more in Lamu as toll rises to 13

Two more people were killed by suspected Alshabab militants in Juhudi Marafa, Lamu county on Sunday amidst rising tension in the area.

The suspects, who were heavily armed, raided the village at around 5pm Sunday, shortly after a high security delegation left the troubled area for Mombasa.

Witnesses said the suspects were spotted arriving in the village in groups of six, before unleashing the massacre.

The death of the duo brings to 13 the number of residents so far been killed by the suspected militants.

So far, 18 suspected Al Shabaab militants have been arrested following the killings that began last week on Monday.

Coast regional commissioner John Elungata, has assured residents of their security saying both the military and police have put in place mechanisms to ensure the safety of those in isolated areas.

“We assure residents of their security, we have held a series of meetings with leaders drawn from Lamu and we have discovered where the loop holes are,” he said.

Yesterday’s high-level security meeting was held in Mombasa instead of Lamu.

It was attended by Lamu Governor  Fahim Twaha, Senator Anwar Loitiptip, Lamu Women Representative Ruweidha Obo and Lamu West MP Stanley Muthama.
