Milestones in the life of a born go-getter

George Albert Omore Magoha was born in 1952. He joined Jina Primary School in Yala between 1960 and 1963.

According to his 91-page curriculum vitae, he then went to Dr David Livingstone Primary School in Nairobi in 1964 to 1966 and Starehe Boys Centre between 1967 and 1970.

He proceeded to Strathmore College (1971-1973); and to College of Medicine, University of Lagos (1973-1978); and Lagos University Teaching Hospital  (1979-1985). He then joined Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, in 1980; and Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London Department of Urology; and Stanford University, Graduate School of Business (1983-2009, respectively.

He was registered with the Nigerian Medical Council, the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom, and the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board of Kenya in 1978, 1983 and 1988, .

He is a decorated scholar with awards such as International Order of Merit, and Gold Medal For Research in Cancer of the Penis in Africans in 2001, Scientific Achievement Award for Excellent Research in Urology in 2001; and has been cited in Marquis’ who-is-who in science and engineering (2002-2003), and in medicine and health care (2002-2003).

He also has a merit award from the University of Nairobi for dedicated service (2015); a Member of the Burning Spear award (2005) and an Elder of the Burning Spear award (2006).

Magoha was appointed chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) in 2016 and held that position until 2019. On March 2019, he was nominated the Education Cabinet Secretary and was sworn into office the same month, a position he served until last year when the Kenya Kwanza administration was elected into office.

In his CV, Magoha describes himself as a professor of urological and transplant surgery since 2000 at University of Nairobi. It says he has led cutting-edge research on prostate, penile and testicular cancer, and erectile dysfunction.
