A Ward Rep was seriously injured after violence erupted  at the Migori County Assembly yesterday, over the planned ouster of Governor Okoth Obado.

The nominated MCA, Mary Ogodo had her left arm broken as the Ward Reps engaged each other in kicks and blows.

MCAs supporting the impeachment motion accused the embattled governor of sponsoring the chaos, in a bid to  scuttle the session.

As the violence escalated, the Sergeant-at-Arms was forced to run away with the mace; a symbol of authority at the Assembly. 

Stormed the House

Ogodo was rushed to St Joseph Mission Hospital following the attack.

“She is in hospital, her left arm is broken. She can’t talk right now but she is stable,” an aide told the People Daily on phone.

Tension began on Tuesday evening after North Kanyamkago MCA George Omamba, got orders from the Migori High Court reinstating him as Deputy Speaker.

Omamba was impeached by his colleagues in May last year alongside assembly clerk Tom Opere.

Tension escalated during the morning session after five Ward Reps believed to be allied to the embattled governor, stormed the House, disrupting an ongoing session which was chaired by Omamba.. 

The MCAs led by Kaler MCA Thomas Akungo MCAs accused Omamba of using the court to forcefully take over the assembly’s leadership in the absence of Speaker Boaz Okoth.

“The five MCAs were hiding in one of the offices at the assembly, before they made their way into the assembly and started creating chaos,” a source at the assembly stated.

Ogodo who was among those supporting the impeachment motion was attacked and sustained a serious injury.

She accused Akungo of causing the chaos and demanded that they be arrested and charged in court.

“We expected law enforcers to act expeditiously to apprehend the culprits,” she said.

The MCAs supporting the impeachment bid accused the governor of hiring goons to intimidate them, into dropping the matter but they vowed to soldier on.

They accused the assembly Speaker of being used by Obado to sabotage the motion.

Okoth previously recorded a statement with the police that his life was in danger, after his bodyguards were withdrawn two weeks ago.

He has since kept off the assembly, making it impossible for the county assembly to discharge any business on the floor, given that the deputy speaker, Omamba had been impeached earlier.

It is against this backdrop that Omamba rushed to court and obtained orders setting aside his impeachment to be able to preside over the Obado ouster motion.
