Mbale FC laboured to pip arch rivals Spanner FC 1-0 in a mouth-watering encounter during the men’s finals of Vihiga sub-county to book a ticket to this year’s Betika-sponsored Chris Oguso Cup finale slated for December 27 at Mmboha Stadium in Luanda.
Madira Assassins beat Mustered Queens 6-5 on post-match penalties after tying 1-1 during normal time, to win the ladies contest from Vihiga sub-county.
In Luanda, Ebwali School defeated Eleven Stars 11-10 on post-match penalties after drawing 1-1 in normal time, while Kafa Ladies also needed post match penalties to stop Luanda Soccer Sisters 3-2 after they had played to a barren draw in normal time.
The annual Oguso Cup that was launched in 2011 has been sponsored by betting firm Betika since 2017, through their flagship ‘Betika na Community’ initiative whose objective is to nurture talent at the grassroots.
In the past, the tournament attracted teams from Mungoma ward of Vihiga sub-County but later expanded to all the five sub-counties within Vihiga County, namely, Vihiga, Sabatia, Hamisi, Emuhaya and Luanda.
During the on-going edition, each sub-county produced 32 teams that played on a knock-out basis from September.
“We have had coordinators from each sub-county and each ward to help in supervising and running the tournament.
At the sub-county level, men’s winners pocket Sh100,000, while runners-up get Sh50,000 and women winners walked away with Sh50,000 and the runners-up picked Sh25,000,” tournament organiser Chris Oguso, a chief inspector of police who also doubles up as the chief executive officer of premier league side Kenya Police, told People Sport.
He added: “During the grand finale men winners will walk away with Sh500,000, with the runners-up pocketing Sh250,000, while the lady winners will be awarded with Sh250, 000 and the runners-up will get Sh100,000.
Before the grand finale there will be a curtain raiser match between Kenya Police FC and Vihiga County Combine team.”
