Matron to be arraigned in court today over dorm fire
A matron of St. John’s Girls High School in Kaloleni, Kilifi county, has been arrested for allegedly burning down a dormitory only one month after schools reopened.
An OB No.27 of January 1 seen by People Daily read that Irene Kerubo Mauti aged 43 was captured by CCTV cameras entering the dormitory at 9.07pm.
The OB also shows that she was again captured running from the dormitory at 9.12pm. “After nearly five minutes of her stay in the dorm, an inferno is then seen engulfing the upper floor of Elgon dormitory less than two minutes after she exits,” read the OB.
Arraigned today
She is currently being held at Kaloleni police station and will be arraigned in court today at Kaloleni law courts to face charges.
A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said investigations are ongoing to establish whether more staff was involved.
“Investigation is still on course. All those involved will face the full force of law. We will not entertain such character in schools,” said the source.
Kilifi County Director of education Veronica Kalungu ordered the management to close down the school indefinitely after the inferno.
The fire razed down the upper floor of the dormitory while students were attending night preps.
Meanwhile, a dormitory at Mariakani Secondary school in Kaloleni sub-county has been gutted by fire.
The Mississipi dormitory was burnt on Saturday night.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
