Matiang’i to tour Gusii as he eyes State House bid

By , April 28, 2025

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is set to return to his Gusii region on Friday after a year’s absence. Matiang’i, who is positioning himself for a 2027 presidential run, will go on a meet-the-people tour before officially declaring his political ambitions.

Accompanied by elected leaders, Matiang’i will visit Chepilat, Kijauri, Keroka, and Keumbu before being crowned as a Kisii clan elder and the community’s political spokesman.

Before his crowning ceremony, Matiang’i will visit the governor’s office to sign the visitor’s book. On Saturday, he will attend an SDA church service in Kisii, followed by a Catholic mass in Nyamira County on Sunday.

His tour will then continue through Kemera, Kebirigo, Ekerenyo, Magwagwa, Nyamaiya, and Nyamira town.

“We urge our people to turn out in large numbers to hear directly from Matiang’i that he is determined to run for the presidency in the next general election,” said Nakuru West MP Samuel Arama.

“This time, the Kisii community will have one of our own on the presidential ballot.”

While there is speculation about which political party Matiang’i might use for his presidential bid, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) party leaders have dismissed claims that he would run on a Jubilee ticket.

UPA national chairman Gisesa Nyambega, secretary general Jacob Bagaka, and party leader Governor Amos Nyaribo have assured Kenyans that Matiang’i will contest through UPA, which he helped form.

Ruto connections

Local leaders have warned that politicians from the Kisii community who are allied with President William Ruto and his UDA party must abandon those connections if they hope to win any political seats in the region in the next elections, saying the “Matiang’i wave” is becoming too strong to resist.

Arama confirmed that Matiang’i will be joined by several MPS, including Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango), Patrick Osero (Borabu), Steve Mogaka (West Mugirango), and Jerusha Momanyi (Nyamira woman rep). Other expected attendees include Gloria Orwoba (nominated senator), Anthony Kibagendi (Kitutu Chache South), Charles Onchoke (Bonchari), Senators Okongo Mogeni (Nyamira) and Richard Onyonka (Kisii), governors Simba Arati (Kisii) and Amos Nyaribo (Nyamira), and several MCAS from both Gusii counties.

Some leaders and residents have warned that those who will not toe the political line of Matiang’i will not be considered for any elective seat in the entire Gusii region
