Trans Nzoia county Governor Patrick Khaemba has unveiled Masinde Muliro’s statue in honour of the multi party democracy fighter.

The 14 feet statue that weighs one tonne was made using 800 kg of bronze, 100 kg of copper and 100kg of tin.

Speaking after unveiling the iconic statue, Khaemba said his administration chose to honour Muliro by erecting the statue and renaming Kitale bus park as well as Kitale business centre.

“Muliro not only served the people of Trans Nzoia County and the Western region but also the people of this country at large, that is why we mounted this statue” Khaemba said.

In honour of his great contributions, Khaemba ordered that Kitale bus park and business centre be named Masinde Muliro Bus park and Business Centre respectively.

The second term Governor asked his successors to follow his footsteps and honour other unsung heroes from the cosmopolitan county.

“I am asking those who will come after us to pick up from where we left. There are other heroes who have not been honoured, please consider them when you take over power,” Khaemba appealed.

Speaking at the event that brought together over 3,000 people at the bus park, Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Sam Ojwang’ said heroes should be honoured for their contributions in nation building.

“Muliro is still remembered for his role in the Lancaster conference and the fight for multi party democracy; we should continually honour all our heroes,” Ojwang’ said.

Former powerful Cabinet Minister Musikari Kombo asked Kenyans to maintain peace before, during and after August 9 elections.

“Muliro was a very sober leader who loved peace in his entire life. He was very selfless and in his honour, let us have very peaceful elections,” Kombo appealed.

Khaemba unveiled the huge conspicuous statue barely three weeks before he exits the political stage.
