Makau Mutua hits back at critics angered after Ruto appointed him
By Arnold Ngure, May 1, 2025Legal expert Makau Mutua has hit out at his critics, who are vehemently opposed to his appointment as an advisor to the executive office of the president.
In a statement on Thursday, May 1, 2025, which comes barely a day after he was appointed, Mutua called out his critics, urging them to let him be and serve his country in the manner he knows best.
“Why are some folks vexed — anguished — about my decision to accept the appointment by President William Ruto as Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs?” Mutua inquired.
“I’ve spent my entire life in the law at the highest levels, especially in the United States. I can’t think of a better way to serve my native Kenya.”
Envy
Mutua also indicated that some of the individuals vexed by his appointment could be secretly wishing they had the job.
“I am sure some of those upset would readily accept the appointment. Chill, folks, and let those who are qualified serve the country. I believe my expertise will be of good service to the president and the country,” the law professor stated.

Ruto on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, appointed Mutua as his senior advisor on constitutional affairs, noting that the professor brings on board a wealth of experience in legal matters and in human rights matters.
“I have appointed Prof Makau Mutua as the Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President. Prof Mutua brings a wealth of experience in legal, constitutional, and human rights matters. Congratulations, Prof Mutua. I welcome you to join a dynamic team of public servants in the implementation of our Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda,” Ruto said in a statement.
Ruto-Raila pact
On his part, the accomplished legal scholar promised to serve the country and accepted the appointment, noting that he would work with diligence.
“I am grateful to His Excellency, President William Ruto, for appointing me Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President. Our Constitution is the beating heart of the Republic. Mr President, I promise to serve you and our fellow citizens with diligence, honour, and distinction,” Mutua stated.
The move is seen as part of the working agreement between the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Ruto, which has witnessed several experts previously in the opposition bastion being donated to work in senior positions in the Kenya Kwanza administration.
This comes at a time when senior political figures, who have fallen out of favour with the president, are coalescing to form a formidable front in an attempt to oust Ruto during the 2027 polls.
