Makadara Law Courts shall resume its operations on July 1 amid heightened security measures.

This follows the fatal shooting of the court’s Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti.

In a statement dated Sunday, Chief Justice Martha Koome said the courts were closed to the public in honour of the late Kivuti adding that the Judiciary was also working to address pressing security concerns at the court.

“We thank the public and all stakeholders for the support they have given us during this difficult time and apologize for the disruption in service delivery at the Court,” read part of the statement.

Koome further noted that following extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, judicial officers, staff and teams working at the Makadara Law Courts will undergo individual and group trauma counselling starting yesterday until tomorrow.

Makeshift structures

During the same period, the Directorate of Building Services shall also oversee the dismantling and removal of makeshift structures at the Makadara Law Courts.

On Thursday, the Makadara Law Courts Users (CUC) will meet to discuss the modalities of operation resumption and review the security measures put in place.

“The CUC shall give clear guidelines on the modalities of hearing matters taking into account the existing infrastructure. The CUC shall also advise on the sustainability of use of virtual courts and registries in some cases so as to reduce congestion,” further read the statement.

On Friday, the Court will reorganize its diaries and assign new dates on pending matters. It will also implement the CUC’s recommendations on the modalities of service resumption.

Following the new dates, all cases that were affected by the suspension of operations will be issued a notice on new dates by the Head of Station and it will be available on the Judiciary website.

According to Koome, the Judiciary will work together with the Makadara Law Courts to ensure that these changes are effective and guarantee a safe and secure environment for the Court.

To guarantee the safety of the judicial officers and team at the Makadara Law Courts, the judiciary issued several directions on security measures for all courts nationwide, to take effect from yesterday.
