LSK decries graft cartels in Judiciary

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Coast branch has expressed concern over rising cases of corruption in the corridors of justice.
Speaking during the High Court leader’s conference at a Mombasa hotel at the weekend, Coast branch chair Matthews Nyabena (pictured) said the vice should be addressed urgently as it has a direct impact on access to justice.
“The Judiciary continues to make decisions that indicate that it is treating and handling corruption cases seriously, there is a bigger concern than it is more likely that a chicken thief will be jailed without the option of fine, while a corruption suspect will walk away with an option of a fine,” said Nyabena.
He added corruption is a type of cancer that has continued to threaten the existence of the bar and the bench.
“We are duty-bound to bring down the graft cartels otherwise we perish. Justice cannot be for the highest bidder, we must join hands and fight this vice. LSK will do everything at its disposal to have a clean justice system,” he said.
The LSK chairperson decried the delay in delivery of judgements and urged judges to do away with a recording of proceedings by hand, and embrace stenography.
