Law Society of Kenya (LSK) yesterday called on the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to carry out thorough investigations into the deaths and injuries visited on Kenyans during anti-government protests.

LSK President Eric Theuri also wants the authority to investigate the use of force and live ammunition by the police, saying during the 12 July protests, there were instances of excessive use of force and unlawful arrests.

The lawyers’ body called on the police to put in place effective measures to prevent further deaths and injuries.

“These protests highlight deep-rooted systemic issues that continue to persist in our country,” said Theuri.
LSK also urged members of the public to maintain peace during protests noting that the right to demonstrate is protected by the law.

“It is crucial to note that the right to protest peacefully does not permit individuals the authority to engage in violent or destructive behaviour.

Violence, vandalism, looting or any form of aggression undermines the purpose and legitimacy of peaceful protests. These actions divert attention from the message and leads to unnecessary disruption of public order thereby diminishing the overall essence, impact and credibility of the protest,” he said.
