Ledama Olekina: ODM sets stage for new leadership and mass recruitment
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is preparing to launch a fresh membership recruitment drive within the next two weeks, as leaders move to rebuild the party and position it for the next election cycle.
In an X post on Saturday, March 28, 2026, Narok Senator Ledama Olekina said the party would not waste time as it reshapes its leadership and strategy following its National Delegates Convention (NDC) at Jamhuri Grounds.
“ODM will begin new membership recruitment in the next two weeks. We are determined to form the next government,” Olekina said.
He added:
“As the new leadership takes shape and the new secretary-general is unveiled soon, we will not waste any time. Never again shall we be in the opposition. As the largest party in Kenya, we will continue to strengthen our position.”

His remarks come a day after the party held a key convention that is expected to define its direction in a period of transition.
ODM leader Oburu Oginga had already signalled the shift in tone, saying the party will focus on grassroots mobilisation and attracting young people, especially Gen Z voters.
“We want to recruit more members. This is the party for the future. We want more members, particularly the Gen Zs. We want them to join us,” Oburu said.

The planned recruitment drive will rely on both traditional mobilisation and digital outreach. Party officials believe this approach will help them reach younger voters, many of whom are active online but remain wary of established political parties.
ODM’s renewed push comes at a time when parties across the country are trying to appeal to first-time voters and rebuild trust with the youth. For ODM, the strategy also aims to expand its national base and keep its influence strong.
However, the party faces internal challenges that could affect its plans.
ODM unity under strain
Even as delegates gathered at Jamhuri Grounds, a separate group of leaders linked to Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino held a parallel meeting at Ufungamano House. Police had blocked access to the venue.

Such scenes risk weakening ODM at a time when unity is critical.
The party built its strength over the years by presenting a united front, even when leaders disagreed behind the scenes. That approach helped it remain competitive at the ballot and influential in national politics.
Now, with a leadership transition underway, ODM must manage internal differences while pushing its new agenda.
The NDC was expected to ratify key officials and set the tone for the party’s next phase. It also comes as ODM explores possible engagement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance, a move that could reshape the political landscape.
At the same convention, ODM delegates removed Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as deputy party leader. National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed announced the decision, saying Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir would take up the roles.
