Leaders in Vihiga County raise concerns over boy child protection
By Enock Amukhale, December 13, 2025Leaders in Vihiga County have raised concerns over the poor boy child protection in the county.
The leaders decried that focus has been put on girl child protection, ignoring the boy child who is now facing danger in social protection.
They observed that the government and other non-governmental organisations have put most of their emphasis on the girl child, forgetting the boy child.
Emuhaya sub-county administration police commander Inspector Roy Wanyonyi, while addressing the public on Friday, 12/12/2025, during Jamuhuri Day celebrations, decried how the boy child has been neglected.
Inspector Wanyonyi decried that the boy child has been neglected, something that has led most of them to get hooked on drug abuse.
“Let us focus on the protection of the boy child the way it is being done to the girl child. In my observation, the boy child has been neglected, and most of the boys now have been hooked on drug abuse,” decried Wanyonyi.
Wanyonyi also used the event to sound a warning to those who sell illicit alcohol and drugs to young boys.
He said the long arm of the law will not spare those selling drugs to minors.
There are people who are selling drugs and illicit brew to young boys here in Emuhaya. We shall deal with peddlers of drugs decisively,” Inspector Wanyonyi said.
He added, “Many youths are engaging in crime because of drug abuse. Most of them commit crime while under the influence of drugs.”

Human rights defender and Emuhaya parliamentary aspirant Ruth Bukachi also decried neglect of the boy child.
Bukachi decried that most of the young boys are hooked on the abuse of chang’aa, asking police to crack the whip on dealers.
Bukachi decried that there are many mushrooming chang’aa dens in the area which are spoiling young boys.
“We have many mushrooming illicit chang’aa dens in the area that are spoiling our young boy child. The police should move with speed by arresting and prosecuting the culprits,” said Bukachi.
Bukachi said he plans to hold a meeting with youth to sensitise them on the dangers of drug abuse.
“I am planning to hold a meeting with youth to sensitise them on the dangers of drug abuse. I will engage them with professionals to give guidance and counselling to them,” Bukachi said.
